Goa Gajah 'Elephant Cave' is one of the most stunning archeological sites which was built in the 9th century and it used to serve as a sanctuary in the past. The key highlight is the façade at the centre which is a relief of various menacing creatures and demons carved right into the rock. This primal figure was once thought to be an elephant, hence which led to the nickname Elephant Cave. It also has an extensive bathing place on the site which was not excavated until the 1950s. These appear to have been built to ward off evil spirits.
